Time Capsule is a presentation of Chinese artist Lu Pingyuan’s work process during his stay in Gothenburg as IASPIS fellow. In order to explore new ways of exhibition production and to remove himself from the standard practices of showing exhibitions of contemporary art in China today, Lu has chosen to present his work in the form of models even though the work has been created in full scale. Pingyuan sees the gallery space as a medical capsule where the art becomes the active ingredient and the space the inactive vessel – the capsule. This specific capsule is a slice of time from his stay in Sweden and Lu’s medicine that aids him to achieve calmness. The exhibition orbits round subjects such as competition within the art world and the different rules this game has in China and the Western world, the frustration among artists always pressured for newness and originality and investigates the relationship between communist ideology and contemporary art.
