Open Call for exhibiting at Galleri BOX 2026

  • – Deadline: 1 March 2025
  • – Tema: ”Mirage” or ”Light as material”

This year Galleri BOX has two themes for the Open Call – ”Mirage” and ”Light as material”. These themes will form the curatorial framework for the exhibition program in 2026. With this year being an election year in an increasingly uncertain future, we look forward to seeing which artists respond as well as the art that is proposed.

Mirage

The physical reflection phenomenon known as mirage means that distant objects that are actually beyond the horizon can appear above the horizon line. The phenomenon occurs when light rays are refracted against air layers of different densities. The sun can often be seen this way above the Arctic Circle in the dark polar night, often many days before it would typically appear above the horizon according to the calendar.

As a curatorial framework, Hägring speaks of making visible what lies beyond the next crest, a premonition of what is to come. It can be something beautiful like an oasis in the desert or a sunrise after a dark winter. Or it shows a bleak prospect that we would rather avoid continuing the journey towards. The mirage can also be seen as a mirage, a false image of reality that confuses us. The concept resonates somewhat in our time, where hopes, omens and fake news are present in everyday life.

Light as material

Light exists as material in the lamp, the projector, the screen or in all the ways in which the materiality of light is present in an artistic process. It lights up, makes visible and dazzles, is reflected between the white walls of the gallery room and is perhaps best seen in the dark. It can affect our spatial perception, cause colors to change hue and add depth to otherwise flat surfaces.

Application

  • – Deadline Friday 1 March at 23.59. Applications received later will not be processed.
  • – You can only apply for one theme.
  • – We only accept proposals via our online form, which you can find at galleribox.se/opencall.
  • – BOX accepts applications from groups and individual artists, only in exceptional cases do we work with curators. Note that we do not exhibit artists who are full-time students at the time of the exhibition, we do not show degree projects and usually do not prioritize artists who have previously been shown at BOX or recently shown in Gothenburg.

About BOX

It is important to know that since BOX is an artist-run gallery, you as an artist are responsible for hanging and taking down the exhibition with some assistance from the gallery’s board members. Also note that we do not exhibit artists who are studying at the time of the exhibition and that the artists we show are expected to have at least an bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.

BOX follows the MU agreement and is pleased to announce that this year, thanks to increased support from the Swedish Arts Council and the City of Gothenburg, we can offer artists who exhibit at BOX participation fee in addition to the exhibition fee!
